A woman looks down at her phone, stressed
Am I in the wrong for refusing to refund my friends their share of the Airbnb after they bailed three days before our trip?
-u/AutomaticSun3594
Four of us booked a mountain cabin two months ago and split the nonrefundable $1600 cost evenly. On wednesday two of them canceled because of work deadlines and demanded their $800 back so they could pay rent. I refused to cover their half out of pocket, and now they say I am stealing their money
Some people don't know what “nonrefundable” means, and apparently they're not willing to learn. Some folks are willfully obstinate about what is going on, like the friends in this story. They knew their friend was in the hole financially, but they refused to take responsibility for it. Nothing can halt a friendship quicker than a disagreement about money. Money is such a personal subject, and everyone has a different relationship to it. When these wires get crossed, conflict can easily unfold. That's what started to happen here, in this group of friends who were trying to figure it out. Keep reading for more.

NTA...Nonrefundable means nonrefundable. Everyone understands the risk when they make these bookings. If they need that money so desperately for rent, they likely should not have agreed to the trip to begin with.
The money they paid is not to you. They paid the airbnb host. You are using your share of the accommodation regardless what they pay or whether they attend or not. You're not the one preventing them from attending. Nta

'so they could pay rent'
What part of using their rent money for a vacation trip seemed a good idea to them at the time?
NTA you don't have their money, the owner of the cabin has it and it is nonrefundable. They knew this when they paid it and the 4th person in the group can confirm this too.

NTA - The only thing I can suggest is that you will refund them if you can find someone to join you (that you are and your other friend are happy to spend the vacation with) and replace them. Other than that: "sorry it ***** but I guess we know not to buy a non-refundable trip next time".
